Questions/understanding for knowledge - Raspberry Pi Forums
so suggested post questions in different section of forum. have no real experience of attempting accomplish, knowledge of whether it's possible or proper way research. of questions asking clarification on whether i'm understand things correctly. please take easy on if can. trying feet wet in hopes can someday swim, not jump in , sink/drown.
ultimate goal rpi use media server. able use movies , music. maybe down road if development progresses, i'd thrilled use internet browsing concede may not possible (to standards) in it's current state.
right now, girlfriend , have bunch of dvd's tucked in corner of our apartment, behind stuff makes hard to. if want watch movie have gain access them first, spend time trying decide 1 want watch. times abandon idea of watching movie because of inability select movie given uncomfortableness find ourselves in while selecting. ideally these movies placed onto hard drive/s accessed on network (true?), whether our bedroom, living room, or anywhere else access network ( ^ )? hard drive connected rpi video player, outputs tv? thus, movies > hard drive > rpi video player > tv?
if above correct, have following questions.
rpi's movie formats need mpeg-2 or vc-1? once license mpeg-2 has been obtained, rip our dvd's external hard drive accessed rpi through network or directly through usb cable?
in addition accessing movies, need video player play movies? , based upon os (distributions?) decide run? these distributions have pro's , con's, developed specific purposes?
in terms of using rpi music, understand play pandora music through pianobar? other music cd library (actual cd's , files in itunes file format.) need these converted file format supported amarok?

browsing depend upon requirements of site, raspberry pi going slow @ rendering complex pages - cost £25 , not same performance pc costing several hundred pounds.
if want use media server (ie sharing files on network , not playing) can use samba - uses same smb protocol used windows shares , can accessed windows , linux etc.
media player the raspberry pi good. if want can plug in - point @ drive full of videos / music , watch / listen raspbmc works (especially when consider cost of pi). http://www.raspbmc.com/

thing raspbmc tailored towards being media centre.
i'm looking @ setting on of pis xbmc running on top of standard raspbian setup, runs xbmc standard, allows exit out normal lxde desktop can still use pc well. how have pc running @ moment (using linux , xfce), i'm working on raspberry pi. there far more can using native apps, not easy use using xbmc.
file formats - music formats supported xbmc (i have mine mp3s), several video formats supported. mpeg / vc-1 supported in hardware need license use hardware acceleration. h.234 mp4 files (xvid) play without needing license key, works on android etc, may format video files.
