Difference between Mambo 4.5.2.3 and Joomla 1.0.4 - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i have mambo 4.5.2.3 installed , working against following platform

mysql version: 3.23.37
php version: 4.1.2
apache                      1.3.20

when trying upgrade joomla 1.0.4, continuously got site offline message. 

i tried fresh install of joomla 1.0.4 , during installation got wrong database username/password.  changed on use database_mysqli.php , instead of getting wrong usesrname/password message sticks install2.php script.  have seen posts suggests need isp enable "extension=php_mysqli.dll" (see http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,10490.0.html).

the problem have may struggle my isp change setting , want know if fix problem, , want know if anything  has changed mambo 4.5.2.3 1.0.4 make change php.ini necessary.

also not sure if on low version of php in systems reqts says requires @ least 4.2 posts seem suggest 4.1.x work (and know 4.1.x works mambo)

any have me sort problem out can upgrade joomla appreciated

move server has more current applications.
you have trouble running many applications.

php 4.1.x insecure.
php 4.4.x or 5.0.x more appropriate right now.

mysqli mysql 4.1 , above.
best mysql current compatibility , updates mysql 4.1.x.
upcoming joomla 1.1 relies on mysql 4.1 back-end translation.
there compatibility mode, can expect challenge.

many applications (including j! , j! components) have compatibility issues default installation of mysql 5.0.x.
if don't want (or don't know how to) deal issues, avoid mysql 5.0.x now.

your isp stuck in time warp.
upgrading current beta not advised, neither using 2 year old applications.
change hosts 1 maintains servers current mainstream applications.
