How did you all get into programming,etc - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i'm beginning developer , i'm wondering how guys started , how learned.

basically did start out learning (html,php,etc) , how (school, books, etc)?
when got down "basics" how did go on becoming more "advanced"? same way?

also if have other advice on getting started app development , web development i'd appreciate it, i'm looking go open source way , avoid m$, php, mysql, , linux way web dev.
i'm still in high school college option still wide open me.

i have read 100pages in php, mysql book , have learned basic php , seems straightforward , i'll going for.

but i'm kind of confused on how start application dev. visual basic supposed easy i'm looking input on part.

i have use joomla , i'm looking go deeper (http://sheldonmsa.org)

also yes i'm aware won't become greatest programmer alive in 5 minutes  :)
