Thread: Windows 7 RC & Ubuntu 9.04 dual boot problems

i've been trying while both ubuntu 9.04 , windows 7 rc7100 setup in dual boot on 1 hard drive. have done following. began windows 7 install. partitioned hard drive first half set ntfs. left second half unformatted. windows 7 default makes "system reserved" partition of 100mb before partition windows 7. beleive system reserve /dev/sda1 , windows partition /dev/sda2. install of windows works great. problem.

when begin ubuntu 9.04 install have major problem @ partitioner. gparted showing have no operating system installed , whole hard drive unformatted. know have half of formatted because can reboot , right windows.

have tried ubuntu first, no matter try ubuntu install, windows 7 installer doesn't partition give , says can't install. ubunutu tried leaving partition unformatted windows, , tried 1 formatted ntfs. windows 7 installer said not install on either. ideas appreciated. have looked around online quite bit, no 1 seems have solid answer on how set when having problem this. closest found saying install ubuntu first, , create partition windows ntfs. everytime tried gave ntfs partition tag not allow windows 7 install on it. i'm out of ideas @ point , think i'm rambling. hope explained problem , i'll answer questions may have. thanks.

when installed windows 7 rc, did on drive pre-existing 60gb ntfs sda1 partition xp, , number of logical partitions already-installed linux distros. told w7 installer use 60gb partition, reformat it. did , installed ok , without 100mb 'system reserved' partition , others have found.

tried on vista/ubuntu laptop. had: sda1 = windows recovery partition, sda2 = vista, sda3 = ntfs shared data, sda4 = extended containing linux logical partitions. again told w7 installer reformat sda2 , did so, installing w7 sda2, , again without 'system reserved' partition. of course, both, had repair grub, ended windows 7/ubuntu multi-boots.

trick seems to offer w7 installer single ntfs partition, tell reformat before installing. have tried that? sounds though tried install directly ntfs partition created gparted. believe there 'enhancements' way vista , w7 create ntfs filesystems. , since gparted saying no operating system intalled, guess it's having problems partition table created w7 disc.

if want start over, try this. gparted on live cd, create new (msdos) partition table - wipe on disc. create 1 ntfs partition (sda1) w7. start w7 installer , tell reformat ntfs partition you've created, , install. once you've got w7 , running, use w7 inbuilt partition tool create further ntfs partitions might need - if need. use live ubuntu cd create linux partitions , install ubuntu.
