Thread: Ubuntu desktop fails to display properly; i screwed my drivers up... where to proceed
hi everyone! ubuntu newbie here; installed impressive os on dual boot vista week ago; looking alternative windows run spring engine; , happy i've found.
business... trying install xorg ati driver integrated 2100 radeon, , somewhere along line, think deleted crucial display settings... when ubuntu boots up, can see loading screen (ubuntu logo , progress bar) when reaches point desktop displayed, see scrambled bars indicative of non-compatible display mode.
bunch of questions... im sure of them "stupid" ones, i'm new os. keeping in mind, vista installed first, , still works fine (however im using grub instead of mbr booting.) there nothing of "worth" in ubuntu install, didn't use work, wiping , beginning again viable option.
1) there way repair problem without re-install? far can see booting in safe mode, still loads same scrambly screen... there way can revert old setup?
2) there way wipe , re-install ubuntu on partition resides in without hopelessly borking computer? how might go doing that; screw booting if it?
3) there way change grub mbr without using vista install disk (i bought computer @ future shop, whatever reason, don't give out vista disks)
information, or somewhere begin, appreciated.
in advance reading long-winded , noobish post
cheers, pal kaiser!
hi kaiser,
sounds you've done of homework here, ati drivers notoriously pain in butt. how did go installing them, provide url guides used?
also, side note mbr stands "master boot records". grub in fact installed in mbr, windows uses different bootloader installed in mbr instead.
on topic of re-installs. can reinstall same way did first time , select manual partitioning, select "linux" partition used @ "/". it's intuitive. sure not use ntfs parititon , should good. grub re-installed , re-configure automatically ubuntu+vista.
on topic of reinstalling windows bootloader on grub, can boot windows recovery console (i don't recall how done in vista, in xp option during install cd screen). once in here there command called "fixmbr" that.
re-installing may simplest approach @ point.
