USB HDD: How bad is bad? - Raspberry Pi Forums

hi,

i've been playing rpi while , absolutely love it. in last 2 days i've experienced extremely slow write speeds on usbv3 external hdd connected. (25kb/s)

realise there many threads out there usb storage problems, of them don't seem indicate problem severe mine. internet faster this. want know if problem "probably" due usb problems described elsewhere (i've tried suggestions, disabling "turbo" mode, etc without success). suspect problem different.

os i'm experiencing problem on raspbmc rc4 (raspbmc seems loathe tell me if has updated or not, look?). i've updated firmware using rpi-update, still same problem. latest bleeding-edge firmware makes video output unstable (to point locking device), seems trying fix this, @ moment i'm running kernel month ago. i'm sorry cannot more specific: trying diagnose late night , haven't had moment gather exact versions, etc. if needed procure.

circumstances:
drive: self-powered seagate 2tb 3.5" usbv3 external, using default ntfs.
other usb peripheral: logitech wireless keyboard. (never had issues device, can try ssh , keyboard unplugged if need be)
power: 1.5a adapter.
100mb wired ethernet.
streaming hd video on network works fine.
streaming hd video off of hdd works fine.
tried minimise cpu utilisation shutting down xbmc (it grinds cpu time), , other services suspected cause load. 'top' shows minimal activity.

1) first realise problem while trying copy file via samba hdd on rpi.
2) decide eliminate samba equation trying nfs: same problem.
3) try initiate copy rpi side instead of other way around: same problem. (even though streaming works fine)
4) try unrar file usb hdd (no network involvement): same.
- checked unrar cpu usage: 1%, no other processes causing load. i'm satisfied it's not cpu related.
5) start suspect ntfs it's bit hard backup 2tb of data re-format, , using device may introduce more variables. besides, i'd see using cpu, , don't.

thought i'd ask before change file-system find same issues.

because know you'll ask: yes want drive attached rpi directly.

by self powered, mean has own power supply?

streaming hd video off hdd works fine - problem when writing device?

worth trying via ssh , removing wireless keyboard, in case combination of 2 causing problem.

worth trying linux native filesystem ext3...sorry.
